Before we analyze the types of conditionals one by one, let’s explain the structure of a conditional sentence. Each conditional sentence consists of two clauses, a conditional clause or if clause and a main clause or a result clause. Look at the first example on the slide. If sales increased in the next quarter, we would make more profit. If sales increased in the next quarter is the conditional or if clause. We would make more profit is the main clause or the result clause. If clause can also follow the main clause, as in the second example: we would make more profit if sales increased in the next quarter.
